Choosing your surgeon remains the most important factor in an ideal outcome. There are flashy LASIK ads everywhere attempting to lure the price-conscious consumer. It is important to note that LASIK is a lifetime investment and your surgeon should be chosen wisely. Taking the extra time to research the credentials and experience of the surgeon is important in achieving the best possible results.

The outcome of any surgical procedure is dependent on the skills and experience of the surgeon and the technology at that surgeon’s disposal. Although there are many important criteria, you should consider the following questions:

• Is your doctor an experienced eye surgeon?
  
• Where was he trained?
  
• Is your surgeon board certified by the American Academy of Ophthalmology?
  
• Does your surgeon possess the skills to handle any complications that may arise?
  
• Does your surgeon have advanced training in cornea and refractive surgery, preferably a cornea specialist who also performs cornea transplants and cataract surgeries?
  
• Does your surgeon and his staff take the time to answer all of your questions in a way you can understand?
  
• Will your surgeon be involved with your pre-operative evaluation and available to you post-operatively as needed?
  
• Does he own and control the clinic he operates in?
  
• Does your surgeon have access to the newest and best technology?
